How Does Invisalign Work?
Easy and Comfortable Teeth Straightening Treatment
Achieving straighter teeth and a healthier bite is easier than ever! Invisalign is the most advanced clear aligner system available and is ideal for patients who want to correct orthodontic issues without braces. When you visit Braces Omaha, Dr. Stevens will walk you through the details of your Invisalign treatment. All you have to do is wear your aligners and keep them clean—Invisalign takes care of the rest!
When you wear the aligners, they put gentle pressure on your teeth to move them into new positions. This is different from braces, which use fixed wires to pull teeth into alignment. You will receive new aligners every 2 weeks, each with greater correction than the one before it. Over a series of months, your teeth will shift into their final positions.
The length of treatment will depend on the type and severity of orthodontic issues you are looking to correct. Straightening out a couple of crooked teeth will be significantly shorter than correcting all of the teeth and/or bite problems. Some patients complete their Invisalign treatment in as little as 6 months. The more you wear your aligners, the faster your treatment will be!
What to Expect After Invisalign
After you finish your Invisalign treatment, you should wear a retainer. Teeth can naturally shift back into their previous positions following any type of teeth straightening, especially within the first year after treatment. We may instruct you to wear your retainer throughout the day and night, or for at least 12 hours per day.
It takes around 9 to 12 months for your body to create new jaw bone that stabilizes the teeth in their new positions. Once stabilized, you won’t have to wear your retainer as frequently. Dr. Stevens may recommend that you wear it a few days out of the week, or only at night. It’s critical to wear your retainer as instructed. That way, you can keep your teeth straight and prevent having to repeat treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions: Invisalign
How painful is Invisalign?
Many patients report that Invisalign is more comfortable than braces. There are no wires or brackets to cause irritation in the mouth. Just like with braces, gentle force is used to move the teeth. This may cause mild to moderate pressure when a new aligner is worn.
What can you not do while wearing Invisalign?
Only water should be consumed while the aligners are in your mouth. When eating or drinking anything else, take them out. Remember to take the aligners out every morning and night to brush them. You should not wear Invisalign when playing sports. Instead, take the aligners out and wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth, then put the aligners back in after the game or practice is over.
Can I bite down on my Invisalign?
Invisalign trays are made to withstand some force, but you should not clench or grind your teeth excessively. There are special Invisalign chewies that you can bite on to close tiny air bubbles between your aligners and your teeth. Biting on these chewies helps the aligners fit more snugly around your teeth. You should not bite down on your aligner without using aligner chewies or if your orthodontist has instructed otherwise.
Do I have to brush my teeth every time I eat with Invisalign?
You do not have to brush your teeth every time you eat, but you should take out your aligners before every meal. If you are able to, rinse your aligners with water every time you take them out to remove bacteria and keep them fresh throughout the day.
